Q: I need to improve my swimming for triathlons. Do you have any suggestions on how to get started?
A: Great question! The swim portion of any triathlon can be intimidating even for an experienced and strong swimmer. However, becoming more comfortable in the water starts with learning how to flow with the water, not fight through it. Developing a sense of proprioception and balance in a horizontal position is the first step. Next, learning how to manipulate the water around you and reduce drag is second. Thirdly, using the techniques you have developed, you can now improve aerobic and anaerobic fitness in the water!
Your best option, as you begin your journey to better swimming, is to schedule a few lessons with a coach and get some stroke pointers including a video of yourself swimming. Seeing what you are doing can help you “fix” those bad habits. Once you feel strong and technically sound, hunt down a masters swim group or ask your local aquatic center or gym for details on swimming groups or adult teams. You can also check out www.usms.org.
